Our History

Calvary Chapel of South Jersey began as a home fellowship in Woodbury, NJ in 1990, at the prayerful suggestion of Joe Focht, our senior pastor and dear friend of CC Philly. Using the simple method of teaching through the Bible, verse by verse, we began.

Within a few years, we had grown out of meeting in home living rooms and had moved to a local fire hall in East Greenwich, to accommodate our needs. We then met on Sundays, as Calvary Chapel of South Jersey, complete with Sunday school and nursery.

Through the years, we have used several buildings as the Lord opened the door, including an elementary school in Deptford and a Methodist church in Almonessen. In 2001, we received the blessed opportunity to purchase a small Methodist church in Bellmawr, NJ and became known as Calvary Chapel Bellmawr. Our fellowship continued to grow and with our own building we were able to add ministries to suit the needs of our church family and the surrounding area. We grew to three Sunday services and a Wednesday evening Bible study, developed an addictions ministry, and expanded our women’s and youth ministries. As the Lord added to our fellowship, we redesigned and expanded the sanctuary to seat more worshippers. We also purchased the house behind the church to use as office space and bookstore. But then, there was no more room once again! So with the leading of the Holy Spirit and much prayer, our Pastor, Harry Pressley, and Elders presented to the congregation the prospect of an empty school on Hessian Avenue in West Deptford, NJ.

Once again, God blessed us with an amazing facility and through an army of committed and joyful volunteers, we are turning it into a place of life, healing, and restoration for all who enter! Our building was dedicated on September 18, 2015, by Pastor Joe Focht of CCPhilly. We continue to seek God as we develop this wonderful home for our ever-growing congregation!

It is our prayer to be a blessing to you personally, to the wonderful community of West Deptford, and to the surrounding area of South Jersey. Please accept this as our personal invitation to you and your family to experience the love and power of Jesus Christ with us, as we worship and study His Word.

What We Believe

We Believe:

...worship of God should be Spiritual. Therefore, we remain flexible and yielded to the Holy Spirit to direct our worship.

We Believe:

...worship of God should be Inspirational. Therefore, we give a great place to music in our worship.

We Believe:

...worship of God should be Intelligent. Therefore, our services are designed with great emphasis upon teaching of the Word of God that He might instruct us how He should be worshiped.

We Believe:

...worship of God is Fruitful. Therefore, we look for His love in our lives as the supreme manifestation that we have truly been worshiping Him.

Our Pastor

Pastor Harry Pressley grew up in the South Jersey area in the turbulent years of the 60s and 70s. When he received Christ as his Savior in 1973, through the testimony of his Vietnam veteran brother, Dennis, he experienced a life-changing relationship with Jesus Christ. He is committed to giving real life answers through the Word of God and to teaching simple, practical application for our every day lives.

Pastor Harry and his wife Irma now live in West Deptford, have raised their six children, and now enjoy their 15 grandchildren.

Pastor Harry started Calvary Chapel of South Jersey as a small home fellowship in Woodbury, New Jersey in 1984. After growing out of the first building in Bellmawr, the church purchased St Matthew's School in West Deptford in 2015.

Pastor Harry teaches two Bible studies on Sunday morning, as well as Wednesday evening. The church also has many thriving ministries committed to grounded Bible teaching, verse by verse.

Our Services

Our services are focused on worship and the Word in a casual atmosphere. Calvary Chapel teaches the Bible verse by verse from Genesis to Revelation.

We have two services on Sunday mornings at 9:00a and 11:00a and Bible study at 6:30p Wednesday evenings.

Our desire is for a distraction-free service. It is for this reason that we ask for children under the age of 12 attend an age-appropriate class. Our Children's Ministry offers classes for all ages on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings as well as a nursery and nursing mother's room. Please ask one of our ushers or greeters to direct you to the Children's Ministry.
